Sumba

If you want to experience savanna in tropical island, Sumba is the place to go. The island in the center of Nusa Tenggara Timur offers you unique scenery: green lush that turns into yellow savanna in the summer; beautiful hills; lakes and waterfalls; and white sand beaches from the west to the east part of the island. Sumba is also famous for its traditional fabric, tenun ikat or weave, which takes months to produce and considered as one of the highest quality textiles in Indonesia.

Tenun ikat is made with organic cotton and natural dyes for coloring. It is still used as currency in traditional events such as funeral or wedding. Men wear ikat for clothing while women turn them into tubular sarong or lau. We will take you to explore Sumba’s natural resources and experience the culture in traditional villages such as learning how to weave ikat with local women.

ITINERARY

DAY 1 | WAINGAPU – WALAKIRI
Upon arrival at Umbu Mehang Kunda airport, meet a local guide and go for lunch in Waingapu. Go to Walakiri Beach to meet youth from Pusat Pengembangan Anak. Do waste management education and beach clean up with 30 youth aged 19-22. Enjoy the sunset at Walakiri, have dinner in Waingapu, and check-in at hotel.

Day 2 | PRAILIU – HILIWUKU – PURUKAMBERA

After breakfast at hotel, we go to Kampung Raja Prailiu to interact with the locals and learn to weave traditional Sumba fabric. We go to Hiliwuku Hills while having lunch. You can see the savanna and wild horses here. Then we go to Purukambera to see the savanna and the beach. Enjoy the scenery until sunset, then go to dinner and back to

Day 3 | Southwest Sumba – West Sumba – East Sumba

After breakfast, our guide is ready to take you to Tarimbang Beach in the western Sumba where you can swim and sunbathe. We will have lunch at Tarimbang. Then we go to Wairinding Hills with its unique scenery where we enjoy the sunset. Go to Waingapu for dinner. If the sky is clear we head to Tanau Hill to see the Milky Way.

Day 4 | East Sumba
After breakfast, we check out from the hotel and go to the marketplace for traditional Sumba fabric. Drop off at Umbu Mehang Kunda Airport, Trip finished.
